There are a lot of sub domains on the Internet. Sometimes there are so many that we do not realize their existence. Sub Domains help you to breakdown your main domains to further smaller parts and adds another level of control to your domain name. Sub Domains create a simple way of organizing information on the website. This is based on the content, service and function of your website.
When creating a sub domain, you can choose whatever name you want to give the sub domain and even the destination url of the sub domain. Your domain registrar normally should provide you with a control panel that will be simple to use. This enables you to create sub domains and also control the sub domains. Sub domains don’t necessarily have to link to addresses on the same domain name. If you have a valid link on which your sub domain is hosted, then your sub domain can point to that link.

Sub Domains can run up to 127 levels deep. They are run by the DNS System (Domain Name System). Each sub domain can contain a maximum of 63 characters. However, the domain name with all the sub domains should not exceed 255 characters. Though sub domains can link to other pages, it can also be an independent host with its own IP address. This technique is used by many websites with high traffic so that they can spread the server loads on different servers and not get overloaded. So instead of all the traffic going on one domain address, the traffic gets spread across the sub domains with the different IP addresses.

You can create your sub domain names anytime once you register the main domain name. The domain registrar provides you with the tools that will enable you to do so. The best thing to do when creating sub domains is to use lower case characters, numbers and a hyphen. Its takes about 24 to 72 hours after the sub domain is created for it to be known and used throughout the rest of the web.
